4th and 5th Grades
This year we have combined these two grades which provides a great advantage for both. Fifth graders have the ability to hear material they have had previously, reinforcing their knowledge for the new material they will learn this year. Fourth graders are subtly introduced to material they will encounter next year and more advanced students have the opportunity to learn beyond the fourth grade curriculum.
Reading: Both grades continue to work on improving their comprehension, and other reading skills. This month we are reading The Watsons go to Birmingham which we will continue into February. During February we will also be reading 3 of Mildred Taylor’s short novels in which racism is the main theme. We will also do a study of the 1950’s and 1960’s Civil Rights Movement and the people and places involved with that movement.
Religion: Presently we are studying the sacraments using the Sadlier series supplemented with the Venture series by Pflaum publishing. As part of Catholic Schools Week we will be making valentines for military veterans and placemats for various nursing homes and Gilda’s Club.
Math: 4th and 5th continue to improve their multiplications skills and graphing and estimation skills. Decimal adding and subtraction, division and fractions are coming up shortly.
Science: 4th and 5th are currently studying the structure of matter, electricity and simple, compound and complex machines. Students complete in-class labs and at-home activities to reinforce what we are learning at school. Foldables and journals helps students grasp and retain the content of their reading as well as writing.
